San Diego City Council advances plan to cancel Flock license plate reader contract
Council committee voted unanimously to cancel Flock contract and tighten surveillance rules amid data center concerns near NAVWAR site.
A San Diego City Council committee voted unanimously to advance a plan to cancel the city's contract with Flock, a license plate reader service, and to tighten the city's surveillance ordinance, Voice of San Diego reported.
Supporters of the plan currently have five votes, but a veto-proof majority of six is needed to finalize the cancellation, according to the report.
The discussion comes amid concerns about a proposed 400-megawatt data center project at the Navy's NAVWAR site near San Diego International Airport. The developer sought cost information from San Diego Community Power for the project.
Mayor Todd Gloria has signed an executive order calling for a moratorium on data centers, but because the Navy controls the land, the city's ability to stop the project is limited, Voice of San Diego noted.
Additionally, a late amendment to the Midway Rising plan could affect the amount of new affordable housing the project will deliver.
Voice of San Diego also announced a live show recording at Soda Bar on November 10, with details available on their website.
