San Diego election sees millions spent by top political donors and campaigns
Local campaigns in San Diego have attracted millions in spending ahead of next Tuesday's election, with key donors backing measures and candidates.
In the lead-up to next Tuesday's election, millions of dollars have been invested in San Diego-area political campaigns, Voice of San Diego reported. The California Democratic Party, Republican Assemblymember Carl DeMaio’s campaign committee, and the campaign supporting Measure B, a proposed countywide sales tax increase, are among the top spenders this season.
Among the largest donors are the Laborers International Union of North America Local 89 PAC, the California Association of Realtors, and Sharp HealthCare, according to Voice of San Diego. Measure B aims to fund healthcare initiatives, address sewage issues in Tijuana, and more, with detailed donor information available.
The local political scene also includes contentious moments, such as accusations on social media against San Diego City Council candidate Martha Abraham, who is running against Councilmember Henry Foster. Abraham has denied claims that she used police to intimidate neighbors, though she has had disputes and police calls involving neighbors. Community members have defended her, noting conflicts with a man she sought a restraining order against.
Additionally, membership in San Diego’s Democratic Socialists of America chapter has nearly tripled in the past two years. However, it remains uncertain if this growth will translate into significant electoral victories similar to those seen in other cities, Voice of San Diego noted.
Voters can find more information about Measure B and other ballot items in a voter guide provided by Voice of San Diego and its partners at KPBS.
