San Jose teens arrested after police shooting and attempted carjacking
Three San Jose teens were arrested following a police shooting and an attempted carjacking early Monday morning.
The San Jose Police Department reported that two 14-year-olds and a 16-year-old were arrested after an incident near North 21st and Santa Clara streets just before 3 a.m. Monday. Officers stopped an SUV for a vehicle code violation, and the driver struck an officer with the vehicle as they approached, prompting another officer to fire a round at the SUV.
The SUV fled and was later found abandoned about three miles south near Lucretia Avenue and Tully Road, according to police. Shortly after, a man flagged officers to report an attempted carjacking on Balme Drive involving three males matching the description of those in the initial incident.
The man, who was driving for a rideshare company, said three males ran toward his vehicle. Officers found the three teenagers hiding nearby. None of the teens were hit by gunfire during the police shooting.
One 14-year-old was booked into Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall for assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a stolen vehicle. The other two were booked for obstructing a peace officer and possession of a stolen vehicle, police said.
This was the department's fourth police shooting this year. The officer involved has one and a half years of experience. The shooting is under separate investigation by the department's homicide unit and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office, with an additional review underway.
