A hiker from Santa Clara was found dead on Mount Whitney after suffering fatal injuries from a fall, the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The man, identified as 49-year-old Winston Chu, had been missing since October 19 when motel staff in Lone Pine noted he had not checked out and left his belongings behind, according to the sheriff’s office statement.

Authorities found Chu’s car at Whitney Portal the following day and confirmed he had a permit for the Mountaineer’s route to the 14,505-foot peak. A California Highway Patrol helicopter later located him along the trail.

The Inyo County Coroner’s Office determined that Chu died from multiple traumatic injuries due to the fall. His identity was confirmed on October 30.

The sheriff’s office extended condolences to Chu’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
