Six common artificial sweeteners linked to faster brain aging
A study found that high consumption of six popular sugar substitutes is associated with a 62% faster decline in cognitive abilities.
A recent study involving nearly 13,000 adults found a significant association between the consumption of six popular artificial sweeteners and faster cognitive decline, according to ScienceDaily Health.
The individuals who consumed the highest amounts of these sugar substitutes experienced a 62% faster decline in memory and thinking skills compared to those who consumed less, which is roughly equivalent to 1.6 additional years of brain aging.
While the study raises concerns about the potential long-term effects of common sugar substitutes on brain health, it did not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship between sweetener intake and cognitive decline.
These findings highlight the need for further research to better understand how artificial sweeteners may impact brain aging and cognitive function over time.
