Six Flags Over Georgia reopens with Goliath coaster closed after fatal accident
Six Flags Over Georgia resumed Fright Fest with lighter crowds while the Goliath roller coaster remains closed during investigation.
Six Flags Over Georgia in Austell reopened on Friday evening for its annual Fright Fest event after closing earlier in the week due to a fatal roller coaster accident, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. The park operated with noticeably smaller crowds, and the Goliath hypercoaster remained shut down behind security barriers as state officials continue investigating the incident that killed a 42-year-old man and injured four juveniles.
Visitors attending the event expressed sympathy for the victims and were mindful of the tragedy as they enjoyed other rides at the park, according to Atlanta News First. The man who died was identified as an educator and IT professional who was beloved by his community.
Cobb County Chairwoman Lisa Cupid and local police addressed the community Friday afternoon in Marietta, emphasizing the county's priority on supporting those grieving and recognizing the impact on guests, employees, and first responders present during the incident, FOX 5 Atlanta reported.
The state insurance commissioner’s office is investigating the accident, and the Goliath ride will remain closed until the investigation is complete, Atlanta News First noted. Despite the closure, Fright Fest activities continued as planned near the ride’s location.
Families returned to the park to support the victims’ families and the park, with some visitors expressing hope that safety measures will be reviewed before the season ends, Atlanta News First added.
