Spanish police investigate possible involuntary manslaughter after Tenerife forward dies following collision with opposing goalkeeper.
Spanish police have launched an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter after a soccer player died following an on-field collision during a second-division match, ABC News reported.
The player, Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel, suffered cardiac arrest after being struck in the chest by the opposing team's goalkeeper, Jesús Owono, during added time near midfield, CBS News detailed. De Miguel was taken to a hospital but later died, leading to the match being abandoned with a 2-2 score.
Owono received a straight red card for the incident and was involved in the immediate response on the field. The National Police confirmed that prosecutors will also be involved in the investigation, according to ABC News.
De Miguel, aged 30 and a Madrid native, made his professional debut in 2015 and had played for several lower-division clubs before joining Tenerife last year, CBS News noted. The club expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a profound sense of sorrow.
The investigation aims to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision and any potential legal responsibility, as stated by Spanish authorities, ABC News reported.
