Stephen Miller to become White House chief of staff, known for immigration policies
Stephen Miller, key architect of Trump's immigration enforcement, will replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff.
CBS News reported that Stephen Miller, a top adviser to former President Trump, is set to become the White House chief of staff starting Monday. Miller has been a central figure in shaping Trump's most controversial immigration policies during both of his administrations.
Miller replaces Susie Wiles, who served as chief of staff during Trump's second term. The staffing change follows significant Republican losses in the midterm elections and upcoming Democratic investigations into the administration's actions, including immigration enforcement.
Miller was instrumental in crafting the administration's travel ban on nationals from several Muslim-majority countries, a policy that sparked protests and legal challenges, with a third version upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018. He also supported the 2018 zero-tolerance policy that led to thousands of family separations and advocated for sharply reduced refugee admissions, setting a record low ceiling of 15,000 for fiscal year 2021.
In addition, Miller pushed for penalizing legal immigrants who received public benefits and making citizenship harder to obtain. During Trump's second term, he pressured Immigration and Customs Enforcement to increase daily immigration arrests to at least 3,000, expanding enforcement efforts significantly.
