A recent survey conducted by the American Communities Project at Michigan State University found that 70% of Americans believe the country is in decline, according to PBS NewsHour Economy.

The survey, which included 2,155 adults and was conducted in September 2026 by SSRS, revealed that almost half of Americans (47%) report experiencing serious financial problems caused by rising prices, a significant increase from previous years.

In comparison, only 27% said they faced such problems in 2023, and 30% in 2025, highlighting growing economic difficulties for many Americans.

The issue of inflation remains the top concern across communities, surpassing other issues like healthcare, education, and housing, the survey noted.

Young adults aged 18-29 reported the highest levels of financial strain, with 61% experiencing serious problems due to price increases.

Overall, the data depicts an unsettled and gloomy electorate, with cost of living emerging as a unifying concern ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
