German Chancellor Merz calls for global free trade alliance in Asia
Chancellor Friedrich Merz urges countries to form a free trade network to counter unilateralism and support international rules.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz concluded a four-day trip to Asia by advocating for a global free trade network based on international rules, DW English reported. He made these remarks during the Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business in Seoul, South Korea.
Merz emphasized the importance of opposing unilateralism, autocratic power politics, and violations of international law. He warned that politicizing supply chains and obstructing access to key technologies threaten growth, prosperity, and regional security, according to DW English.
The chancellor's call for a free trade alliance echoed similar appeals he made earlier in Singapore and Japan. His visit highlighted Germany's interest in strengthening economic ties in the Asia-Pacific region.
South Korean Prime Minister Han Seong Sook noted that German companies are using South Korea as a central hub to expand their presence in the Asia-Pacific, DW English reported.
Meanwhile, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is scheduled to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, signaling ongoing diplomatic engagement in the region.
