Tampa City Council approves $60 million community benefits agreement with Rays
The agreement ties $60 million in investments to the Rays' proposed stadium, including funds for affordable housing and parks.
The Tampa City Council approved a community benefits agreement with the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, advancing plans for a new stadium in Tampa, WUSF reported. The agreement requires the Rays to pay the city $21 million in cash, services, and programs, with a total commitment of $60 million shared between the city and Hillsborough County, according to WFLA 8.
Under the agreement, the city will receive $4.2 million over five years, with funds directed toward transportation, workforce development, youth sports, and community redevelopment areas, WUSF noted. At least half of the money is earmarked for affordable housing and parks in neighborhoods near the proposed stadium.
Council members discussed how best to allocate the funds, with some expressing concerns about the vague specifics of the projects, Tampa Bay Times reported. Despite some opposition, the motion passed 4-3, with Councilman Luis Viera voting yes before his upcoming resignation.
Supporters like Councilman Bill Carlson praised the Rays and various agencies for their collaborative efforts to bring resources to West Tampa and Drew Park, according to WUSF. Critics questioned the source of the funds, noting that the money is taxpayer dollars returning to the community rather than new revenue from the team.
The council is set to vote on Viera's replacement on November 17, which could impact future decisions related to the stadium and community benefits agreement, WUSF added.
