A 16-year-old former student of Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, opened fire on school grounds Thursday afternoon, killing three children and a teacher, according to KATU as reported by kfoxtv.com, wgme.com, and wset.com.
Authorities said the shooting began around 12:58 p.m. near the school on Brentwood Avenue. The teen crossed a fence from an undeveloped area, fired at a passing pickup truck, and then forced his way into a classroom where he fired as many as 15 rounds.
The suspect, identified as Griffin J. John II, is not currently enrolled in Bend-La Pine Schools. Investigators are still tracing his route to the school but believe he walked there.
A witness, Kaylub Giamanco, who has children attending the school, retrieved a legally secured .40-caliber pistol from his vehicle and confronted the shooter inside the school. Giamanco fired multiple times, hitting the suspect while a teacher struggled physically with him.
All the victims were shot inside the classroom the shooter entered. The teacher also attempted to disarm the suspect by throwing her cellphone at him and tackling him.
