Tesla crashes into CHP cruiser on I-80 between San Francisco and Sacramento
Two officers were seriously injured when a Tesla hit their cruiser on I-80; driver claims he was asleep using self-driving mode.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) released dashcam footage showing a Tesla colliding with one of its patrol vehicles on Interstate 80, between San Francisco and Sacramento, according to fox7austin.com and fox5ny.com. The crash occurred while CHP officers were at the scene of a separate accident, directing traffic into the slow lane with emergency lights, road flares, and cones activated.
The Tesla driver told investigators he was asleep and that the vehicle’s self-driving features were engaged at the time of the collision. CHP emphasized that despite the name, the full self-driving system is not fully autonomous and drivers remain responsible for safely operating their vehicles.
Two state officers inside the cruiser were seriously injured but have since been released from the hospital. Authorities have not disclosed whether the Tesla driver will face charges. The driver was identified only as a 22-year-old man from Sacramento.
CHP hopes the released video will serve as a warning to drivers about the dangers of misusing automated driver assistance systems. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the limitations of current self-driving technologies and the importance of driver attentiveness.
