Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production in Texas to focus on Cybercab
Tesla will stop Cybertruck production by mid-2027 to increase output of its self-driving Cybercab taxis at Texas factory.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company will wind down production of its Cybertruck at the Texas Gigafactory around mid-2027, according to Al Jazeera and The Guardian.
The decision is intended to free up factory capacity to increase production of the Cybercab, Tesla's new self-driving taxi model, as reported by BBC and The Guardian.
The Cybertruck, launched in 2023, has received a mixed response with its angular stainless steel design being polarizing and sales lagging behind initial expectations, according to Al Jazeera and BBC.
Musk had initially predicted annual sales of about 250,000 units, but the model faced quality issues and recalls, contributing to disappointing sales, BBC reported.
The Cybertruck also became a symbol of opposition to Musk amid his increasing involvement in US politics, including significant campaign spending and a brief government role, Al Jazeera noted.
