Thousands mourn victims of deadly church attack in Jordan
Eight of nine victims killed in a church shooting in southern Jordan were buried amid national mourning.
Thousands gathered in southern Jordan to mourn eight of the nine people killed in a rare attack on the Christian minority, Al Jazeera English reported.
The funerals took place beside St George’s Greek Orthodox Church in the village of Hamoud, southwest of Amman, two days after gunmen opened fire during a funeral service, killing nine and wounding dozens.
Jordan’s Prime Minister Jafar Hassan attended the service along with government ministers and senior officials, representing the king, according to the state news agency Petra.
Security personnel guarded the area as coffins wrapped in Jordanian flags were carried through crowds, with priests leading prayers during the procession.
Eyewitness accounts described panic as gunfire erupted outside the church, with people rushing inside to escape. Bullet holes and shattered windows remained visible the following day as cleanup efforts continued.
The ninth victim was scheduled to be buried the day after the main funerals, and authorities are still searching for the attackers, Al Jazeera reported.
