Trump administration to maintain aggressive immigration enforcement after midterms
Despite election results, ICE will continue high arrest targets under Stephen Miller's leadership, sources say.
The Trump administration is expected to continue its aggressive crackdown on illegal immigration following the recent midterm elections, multiple U.S. officials told CBS News Bay Area.
The officials cited the promotion of immigration hardliner Stephen Miller to White House chief of staff as a key factor signaling no reduction in enforcement efforts.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been instructed to carry out about 19,000 arrests per week, or roughly 2,700 per day, an increase from a previous daily target of 2,000 arrests, according to agency sources.
This enforcement target was set prior to the midterm elections, and no instructions to scale back immigration enforcement have been given since, the sources said.
Although Democrats will control Congress starting in January and have powers to investigate immigration policies, officials expect continued deportation efforts under the current administration.
The sources also noted that the administration believes economic concerns were a main driver behind Republican losses in the elections.
