San Francisco AI music platform sued for unauthorized use of Eminem's songs
A San Francisco-based AI platform faces a lawsuit for allegedly copying Eminem's copyrighted music without permission.
CBS News Bay Area reported that a Michigan music publishing company affiliated with rapper Eminem has filed a lawsuit against Suno, an artificial intelligence music platform with an office in San Francisco.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges that Suno reproduced 269 musical compositions owned or controlled by Eight Mile Style, the publishing company, without authorization.
According to the court documents, Suno trained its AI model on these copyrighted works, allowing users to generate songs with vocals and lyrics based on prompts, effectively creating unauthorized copies.
The complaint also claims Suno scraped millions of songs and lyrics from platforms like YouTube Music, Deezer, and Genius, and gave an example where the AI generated a track replicating Eminem's 'Lose Yourself' lyrics verbatim.
Eight Mile Style is seeking a court order to destroy unauthorized copies of its works held by Suno, as well as damages potentially exceeding $40 million.
Suno responded by stating it aims to help people create original music, not to trade or exploit copyrighted content.
