Trump agrees to grant visa to mother of Ghanaian boy killed in Bronx shooting
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani says President Trump will immediately grant a visa to the mother of a 15-year-old boy shot dead in the Bronx.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that US President Donald Trump has agreed to grant a visa to the mother of Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old Ghanaian boy who was fatally shot in the Bronx while on his way to school, according to Al Jazeera and DW English.
Javits Frimpong moved to New York from Ghana last year to live with his father and pursue a better life, as reported by DW English. The shooting occurred on a Thursday morning, and Frimpong died later that day in hospital after being shot in the abdomen.
Following a phone call between Mamdani and Trump, the president agreed to expedite the visa process for the boy’s mother so she could travel to New York to say goodbye to her son, Mamdani said on social media platforms X, according to both outlets.
The incident has prompted widespread mourning in New York City, with thousands attending vigils. Congressman Richie Torres expressed sorrow over the loss of a young life with a promising future. Police are investigating the shooting but have not made any arrests yet.
Ghanaian Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that Ghanaian officials are coordinating with local authorities and assisting with the visa application for the mother, DW English reported.
The White House has not yet commented on the phone call between Trump and Mamdani, according to DW English.
