UC Davis to launch new one-year master of education and teaching credential program
UC Davis will start a new program in July 2027 allowing students to earn a teaching credential and master’s degree in one year.
UC Davis announced it will launch a new master of education degree combined with a teaching credential program, approved by the University of California Office of the President in August, according to the Davis Enterprise.
The School of Education plans to welcome the first cohort in July 2027, aligning with the start of K–12 student teaching placements. The program allows students to complete both credentials in one year.
Coursework and mentorship will focus on teaching methods, instructional development, and educational research to prepare educators for evolving classroom needs.
This new M.Ed. program replaces the School of Education’s previous six-quarter M.A. in Education pathway, which will be phased out as current students finish their degrees.
UC Davis continues to offer multiple subject credentials and single subject credentials in agriculture, English, math, science, social science, and bilingual authorizations in Spanish and Mandarin.
California faces teacher shortages, indicated by a rise in substandard credentials and permits issued when fully credentialed teachers are unavailable. In 2024–25, nearly 8,000 such permits were granted, highlighting the need for expanded teacher preparation programs like UC Davis’s new offering.
