USF men's and women's basketball teams open season with new coaches at Yuengling Center

The University of South Florida's men's and women's basketball teams will begin their seasons Monday at the Yuengling Center on USF’s Tampa campus, each led by newly hired head coaches, WUSF reported. The women's team faces Furman at 5 p.m., followed by the men's team playing Charleston Southern at 7 p.m.

The new coaches, hired a day apart in March, aim to continue the successes of their predecessors. The men's coach, Mack, took over after Bryan Hodgson left for Providence and has rebuilt the roster with 12 transfers and three high school recruits. The women's coach, Curry, came from Alabama to lead a program with a strong history under Jose Fernandez, who moved to the WNBA in 2025.

Mack highlighted senior point guard Sonny Wilson as a key player for the men's team. Wilson, a transfer from Toledo, has started 98 games over three seasons and is considered one of the fastest point guards in the country. Mack emphasized a fast-paced style of play and strong defense to support Wilson's playmaking abilities.

Both coaches expressed a shared commitment to raising South Florida's basketball programs and providing fans with winning and entertaining basketball in what they call 'Tampa Bay's home for hoops.'
