93-year-old woman in Japan helps police arrest scammer at her home
A 93-year-old woman in western Japan pretended to fall for a scam to assist police in arresting a suspected fraudster.
A 93-year-old woman living in the Shiga region of western Japan helped police arrest a suspected scammer by pretending to fall for his scheme, CBS News reported.
The woman received phone calls over two days from a man claiming to be a police officer who falsely told her that her bank account had unauthorized withdrawals.
The scammer instructed her to give her ATM card to a man posing as a police officer who would visit her home to verify the account.
Suspecting fraud, the woman consulted her son and local police while waiting for the visitor. Police officers arrived at her house before the man did and arrested him when he appeared at her doorstep.
A police official described the woman as being in good health and highly articulate and encouraged other elderly residents to seek family help if they suspect fraud.
Japan has the second-oldest population worldwide, and senior citizens are frequently targeted by fraudsters who stole about $2.0 billion from victims last year.
