TechCrunch reported a significant increase in autonomous vehicle (AV) startup activity in 2026, with Trucks VC receiving pitches from 81 new companies, marking a two-thirds rise compared to last year and surpassing the AV boom of 2016 and 2017.

According to Trucks VC partner Puneeth Meruva, this surge is fueled by advancements in AI, particularly foundational models that enable end-to-end AV system architectures, which were previously a challenging goal for the industry.

These foundational AI models excel at generalizing across various environments and scenarios, potentially reducing costs and accelerating deployment timelines for autonomous vehicles, as noted by Meruva.

The availability of powerful open-source models like Nvidia’s Alpamayo and Qwen’s vision-language-action models has lowered barriers to entry, allowing startups to launch quickly and with less than $1 million in funding, according to Trucks VC.

While many startups focus on sectors like construction, warehousing, agriculture, and mining, there is a notable increase in companies applying AV technology across diverse areas, indicating a broadening scope of innovation within the industry.
