Baltimore County council considers tax break for Anduril shipyard project
Anduril plans a $3.7 billion investment and over 3,100 jobs at Sparrows Point, sparking debate over military industry incentives.
Baltimore County is set to consider granting a personal property tax break to defense company Anduril for its new shipyard project at Sparrows Point, WYPR reported. The project involves a $3.7 billion investment and is expected to create more than 3,100 jobs in the area.
Supporters of the project, including President Trump, Governor Wes Moore, and local business leaders, have praised the economic potential. Mark Anthony Thomas, CEO of the Greater Baltimore Committee, highlighted the project's catalytic effect on adjacent industries and noted positive recognition from an economic development conference in New Orleans.
However, the project has faced criticism from some community members who oppose incentivizing military manufacturing. At a recent county council hearing, speakers expressed concern that the investment supports war efforts rather than local infrastructure and public services, urging the council to prioritize constituents' needs.
Despite the opposition, a majority of county council members appear inclined to approve the tax break, which could total up to $210 million over 30 years. Council Chairman Mike Ertel described the development as very exciting and indicative of positive economic growth for the region.
The decision on the tax break is expected soon, with county officials and business leaders emphasizing job creation and economic development as key benefits of the Anduril shipyard project.
