Orioles hire Jared Banner to lead player development and boost team success

The Baltimore Orioles have hired Jared Banner as their new general manager, with a focus on revitalizing the team's player development efforts, The Baltimore Banner reported. Banner, who has experience in player development roles with the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, and Chicago Cubs, was introduced at a press conference where he outlined his approach to making practice more like actual game conditions to ease player transition.

Banner expressed enthusiasm about joining the Orioles, citing the franchise's storied history, passionate fan base, and committed ownership as key factors in his decision, according to The Baltimore Banner. The team has faced challenges recently, with two consecutive losing seasons following a 101-win campaign in 2023, prompting leadership changes.

Under the new structure, Banner will oversee internal players, coaches, player development, performance, and healthcare, allowing Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias to focus more on scouting and player acquisition. Elias highlighted this division of responsibilities as a way to leverage each executive's strengths, per The Baltimore Banner.

The Orioles and Banner face the task of improving a struggling player development department, a challenge that Banner acknowledged will require pushing the front office and embracing some discomfort, The Baltimore Banner noted. Local sports commentators have begun discussing the potential impact of Banner's leadership on the team's future.

As the Orioles work to rebuild their core and return to competitive form, Banner's role will be central to shaping the team's internal growth and long-term success in Baltimore.

What we're watching: How Jared Banner's player development strategies will influence the Orioles' performance in upcoming seasons and whether the team can regain its winning momentum.
