Flavio Bolsonaro reportedly flees Brazil for US amid investigation
Brazilian senator Flavio Bolsonaro left Brazil for the US after losing presidential election and amid a probe, reports say.
Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro reportedly left Brazil for the United States following his defeat in Sunday's presidential runoff election, according to reports from Folha de S.Paulo and Reuters citing sources close to the senator.
The Supreme Court had ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his passports to prevent him from leaving the country amid ongoing investigations, but reports conflict on whether he complied. AFP cited a police official confirming his passports were canceled, with no official record of his departure.
Folha de S.Paulo reported that Bolsonaro's plane was expected to land in Miami or Dallas. Meanwhile, Argentine authorities denied reports that Bolsonaro crossed into Argentina to board a plane to the US.
Brazilian media indicated the federal police were still searching for Bolsonaro after he missed a deadline to hand over his passport to authorities, fueling speculation about his whereabouts.
The Supreme Court's cancellation of Bolsonaro's passport followed a criminal case against him, as reported by The Guardian. Bolsonaro's flight from Brazil comes days after his loss in a closely contested presidential election.
