Islamic Center of San Diego placed on lockdown as precaution
San Diego police placed the Islamic Center on lockdown Tuesday afternoon out of caution, following a deadly shooting earlier this year.
The Islamic Center of San Diego in Clairemont Mesa was placed on lockdown Tuesday afternoon, according to KPBS and FOX 5 San Diego. The lockdown was later lifted, and the specific reason for it was not disclosed by authorities.
San Diego police stated the lockdown was implemented “out of an abundance of caution” and officers were present at the mosque to ensure safety, according to the Times of San Diego.
This precautionary response comes five months after a hate-motivated shooting at the same mosque left three people dead and two teenage gunmen who committed suicide nearby, as reported by the Times of San Diego.
The May shooting involved an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old who killed a security guard and two congregation members. Writings found with the gunmen indicated hatred toward various religions and races.
A 17-year-old girl from North Carolina was later arrested and indicted for murder in connection with the shooting, accused of agreeing to live-stream the attack, according to the Times of San Diego.
Authorities have not provided further details about the lockdown or any ongoing threats, and the police presence was intended to reassure the community and maintain safety at the site.
