Becerra leads Hilton in California governor's race with 61% support

Democrat Xavier Becerra maintains a commanding lead over Republican Steve Hilton in California's governor's race, with 61% of likely voters supporting Becerra compared to 34% backing Hilton, according to a recent UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times, CBS News Los Angeles reported.

Becerra's lead has grown since September when the margin was 25 percentage points. If elected, he would be California's first Latino governor in over 150 years. Becerra's rise to frontrunner followed a crowded primary and the exit of former candidate Eric Swalwell amid allegations, which shifted support toward Becerra.

Republican Steve Hilton has made a final campaign push in the Los Angeles area and Huntington Beach, focusing on affordability and criticizing Democratic control of state government. Despite trailing in polls, Hilton expressed optimism about his chances and emphasized the need for change, CBS News Los Angeles noted.

The race has centered on differing visions for addressing California's high cost of living. Becerra has taken a cautious approach in the general election, agreeing to only one debate. Voters also increasingly prioritize opposition to the Trump administration, which Becerra has highlighted given his experience as California attorney general.

Both candidates have received high-profile endorsements: Becerra from Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris, and Hilton from former President Donald Trump. The election outcome will determine the state's leadership following Newsom's term limit.

The election is closely watched in Los Angeles and statewide due to its potential impact on policies related to affordability and governance in California.
