Michael Cooper, affectionately called Coach Coop, has passed away, WRAL reported. He was a cherished member of Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School (SRMHS), where he played a vital role in the football program.

Coach Coop was recognized not only as a coach but also as a mentor, leader, and father figure who supported young men both on and off the field, according to WRAL.

Tributes have come from various schools, teams, and former students who were influenced by Coach Coop's work beyond the SRMHS community.

In his honor, the Southeast Raleigh HS football team will wear special helmet decals during games, WRAL noted. The principal of SRMHS, George Harden, shared a letter expressing condolences and encouraging students and parents to seek mental health support if needed.

The Southeast Raleigh Bulldogs and GTFC are preparing for their state championship run, drawing motivation from Coach Coop's lasting impact on the team and community.
