Brazil's Lula wins presidential runoff against Flavio Bolsonaro
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured a fourth term, defeating Flavio Bolsonaro with 51.7% of the vote after extended voting.
Brazil held a presidential runoff election between left-wing incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and right-wing challenger Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, according to DW English.
The voting was extended by two hours following complaints about transportation issues, as reported by The Guardian and DW English. The local electoral court ordered the restoration of the entire bus fleet and issued an arrest warrant for the municipal transport secretary, who was abroad and unavailable for arrest.
After counting resumed, official results showed Lula winning with 51.7% of the vote against Bolsonaro's 48.2%, reversing Lula's first-round defeat to Bolsonaro, DW English reported.
The campaign was marked by scandals and mudslinging, and the vote count was temporarily disrupted due to the voting extension and transportation problems, according to DW English and The Guardian.
Lula's victory grants him a fourth term in office, continuing his leadership in Brazil, as confirmed by electoral authorities and reported by DW English.
