Brevard schools reopen Thursday after deadly flooding and water issues
Brevard Public Schools will reopen Thursday following days of flooding that caused closures and a state of emergency.
Brevard Public Schools announced they will reopen all campuses on Thursday, November 5, after days of flash flooding forced school closures and led to a state of emergency in the county, WKMG reported.
The district said transportation, before- and after-school care, and extracurricular activities will resume as scheduled, though bus delays may occur in areas still recovering from storm damage. Storm-related student absences will be excused.
Some campuses served by Melbourne's water utility remain under a boil water notice due to a water main break that affected several communities, including Indialantic and Satellite Beach. The district is taking additional safety precautions at those schools but did not specify which ones, according to WKMG.
The flooding, described as historic by FOX 35 Orlando, caused significant road and property damage and resulted in two confirmed deaths in Brevard County. Florida Fish and Wildlife officers rescued over 60 people using helicopters, drones, and boats during the storm, WKMG reported.
Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for Brevard and six other counties, activating state agencies and the National Guard to assist with recovery efforts, WKMG said. The district had kept schools closed for three days to ensure safety and complete inspections and cleanup, FOX 35 Orlando reported.
