Florida schedules 19th execution of 2026 on same day as Indiana and Alabama
Florida plans to execute Jesse Guardado, marking the state's 19th execution this year, alongside two others in Indiana and Alabama.
Florida is set to carry out its 19th execution of 2026, according to WFLA 8, with Jesse Guardado scheduled for lethal injection on the same day as executions in Indiana and Alabama. This marks the second time this year that three executions are planned on the same day in the U.S.
Guardado, 64, confessed and pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing a 75-year-old woman in her Walton County home in 2004. He stole valuables from her to support a drug habit. The victim had previously helped him secure a job and housing, WFLA 8 reported.
Florida’s death penalty activity this year matches a record set in 2025 under Republican Governor Ron DeSantis. The state has carried out more than half of the 32 total executions nationwide so far in 2026.
The executions come amid renewed scrutiny of the death penalty following a failed execution in Tennessee, although courts have rejected efforts to halt other scheduled executions. A federal appeals court previously ruled that Guardado received a full and fair hearing during his sentencing phase.
Indiana’s scheduled execution involves Jeffrey Weisheit, convicted of setting a fatal house fire in 2010. His lawyers sought brain scans and sentence reduction, but the Indiana governor declined. Alabama is also set to carry out an execution on the same day, WFLA 8 reported.
