California state workers plan one-day strike affecting DMV and EDD services
State workers represented by SEIU Local 1000 will strike Wednesday, potentially delaying DMV, unemployment, and other services in Sacramento and statewide.
Tens of thousands of California state workers are expected to participate in a one-day strike on Wednesday, according to mv-voice.com and lompocrecord.com. The strike is organized by SEIU Local 1000, representing about 100,000 public employees including those working in the DMV, Employment Development Department (EDD), and other agencies.
The union members are protesting what they describe as bad-faith bargaining by Governor Gavin Newsom's administration during negotiations for a new labor agreement. Their previous three-year contract expired on June 30, and this strike would be the first statewide walkout in the union's 44-year history.
Services at DMV offices may be limited or offices could close early, potentially impacting Sacramento area residents who rely on these services. Similarly, unemployment benefit processing at the EDD and food assistance programs like CalFresh might experience delays due to the strike.
Although state park rangers are not part of Local 1000, state parks could still be affected by the strike. Union leadership has asked Californians to be patient and understanding during the work stoppage, emphasizing that the strike is about securing fair wages for state workers.
Local 1000 has the option to call off the strike at any time before Wednesday, but if it proceeds, residents should be prepared for possible disruptions and consider rescheduling appointments if necessary.
