Charleston Water System to replace nearly 1,000 lead pipes downtown and North Charleston
Charleston Water System begins free lead pipe replacements for eligible homeowners in downtown Charleston and North Charleston.
Charleston Water System (CWS) has launched a significant project to replace lead water service lines in downtown Charleston and North Charleston, according to WCIV. The effort targets nearly 1,000 locations where lead pipes are still in use, replacing them with copper pipes to improve water safety.
The replacement program includes pipes owned by the city and extends to the service lines running directly to individual homes. CWS officials emphasized that this initiative has been years in the making and is offered free to eligible homeowners, as reported by WCBD.
Homeowners in affected areas are encouraged to sign up for the free pipe replacement to avoid the high costs of doing the work independently, which could range from $2,000 to $4,000 or more. Charleston Water System communication manager Mike Saia described the program as a "one-shot opportunity" for residents to have their lead pipes replaced at no cost.
Some residents have already taken precautions against lead exposure by installing water filters, but the replacement program aims to provide a more permanent solution. The project reflects ongoing efforts to address water safety concerns in Charleston and North Charleston, according to wtma.com.
The Charleston Water System is actively reaching out to residents to participate in the program and plans to continue the replacements until all identified lead service lines are addressed.
