The Grossmont Union High School District has agreed to reinstate nine teacher-librarian positions that were cut in 2025, according to reports from FOX 5 San Diego, KPBS, and The San Diego Union-Tribune. This decision follows a settlement of a labor dispute with the teachers’ union that had filed an unfair practice charge against the district.

The district’s school board voted unanimously in a closed session to approve the reinstatement of all teacher librarians for the 2027-28 school year. The settlement also includes the union withdrawing the unfair practice charge and related claims, as reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Under the terms of the agreement, each reinstated librarian will return to the position they held during the 2024-25 school year. The district also agreed not to demote, lay off, reduce hours or compensation, transfer involuntarily, or reduce librarian duties through the 2028-29 school year, except in cases of voluntary transfer or dismissal for cause.

The librarian cuts in 2025 had sparked public outrage and protests, with critics saying students suffered from the loss of library services. The president of the Grossmont Education Association described the cuts as political and retaliatory, while the district’s board president said the agreement focuses on the future and the best interests of the East County community.

This resolution comes after nearly 20 months of turmoil and reflects a shift in the district’s approach to library staffing in its high schools. The reinstatement aims to restore library resources and support for students across the district’s schools.
