A significant shift occurred in North Carolina's congressional delegation as Democrat LaKesha Womack defeated incumbent Republican Tim Moore, according to WFAE.

Moore, a former state House Speaker and a key figure in drawing the district map, had easily won previous elections and raised nearly $2 million for his 2026 campaign.

Womack, a Charlotte resident and first-time candidate, raised only $56,000, spending it on campaign signs, literature, and travel, focusing on rural areas of the district.

Her campaign was buoyed by low approval ratings for President Trump, which gave her and other Democrats hope despite the district's conservative lean.

The district includes parts of western Mecklenburg County, Gaston, Rutherford, Burke, and Cleveland counties, areas traditionally dominated by Republicans.

Womack's victory contributes to a potential shift in the state's congressional delegation from a Republican majority to a Democratic majority.

This result highlights changing political dynamics in districts previously considered safe for Republicans.
