Decatur police are probing an arson after political signs were set on fire near Willow Lane and Superior Avenue.
Decatur police are investigating an arson incident after several political signs were intentionally set on fire near the intersection of Willow Lane and Superior Avenue on Monday, Nov. 2, according to Atlanta News First.
Lieutenant John Bender of Decatur Police said officers responded after an unknown person burned multiple political signs in an attempt to destroy them. Among the signs was one supporting Jon Ossoff, while others were damaged beyond recognition.
The fire occurred at the Willow Lane Pollinator Habitat, a small city-owned greenspace also known as the Bee Garden. A resident who reported the fire noted that it spread from the signs into mulch, reached the base of a large tree, and then ignited another sign.
Fortunately, Decatur firefighters arrived in time to prevent the fire from causing more serious property damage or injuries, despite its proximity to several nearby homes.
The Decatur Police Criminal Investigations Division is handling the case but has not yet identified any suspects or motives. Police have not stated whether the signs were targeted due to their political content.
This incident happened the night before Election Day as reported by Atlanta News First and Decaturish, highlighting concerns about political tensions in the area.
