Tanya Miller elected Georgia attorney general, first Black woman to hold office
Tanya Miller wins Georgia attorney general race, becoming the first Black female in the role.
Tanya Miller was elected Georgia attorney general, defeating Republican Brian Strickland, Atlanta News First reported. Miller succeeds Chris Carr, who left the position to run unsuccessfully for governor.
Miller is the first Black woman to hold Georgia's top law enforcement office, marking a historic milestone for the state. She has a background as a federal prosecutor and served as a Fulton County homicide prosecutor.
Before winning the attorney general race, Miller was elected to the Georgia state House in 2022 and served as Democratic Caucus Chair after one term. Her opponent, Brian Strickland, is an attorney from McDonough and has legislative experience in both the state House and Senate.
Strickland served as floor leader for two governors and chaired the Senate judiciary committee since 2021, according to Atlanta News First. Miller's election reflects ongoing political developments in Georgia, a state with growing national political significance.
