Courthouse Creek Cider in Goochland closes as owners plan move to West Coast
Courthouse Creek Cider in Goochland County has closed as owners prepare to sell and relocate to California.
Courthouse Creek Cider, a cidery located in Goochland County just north of Route 6, has closed its doors, Richmond BizSense reported. The business was founded in 2016 by married couple Liza Fierro-Cioffi and Eric Cioffi, who also planted an apple orchard on their 10-acre farm where they produced and barrel-aged their ciders using all farm-grown ingredients.
The Cioffis are planning to sell the business along with its real estate at 1581 Maidens Road, describing it as a 'residence plus asset sale' with various potential uses for the property. Eric Cioffi, who also worked as a lawyer, said they are retiring and moving back to their hometown on California’s Central Coast to be closer to family and focus on health and travel.
The cidery experienced challenges over the years, including a fire in 2017 that destroyed their home adjacent to the cidery. They rebuilt the house and expanded the tasting room, which more than doubled in size. Courthouse Creek also operated a second tasting room in Scott’s Addition from 2018 until it closed in 2021 due to the pandemic, while business at the farm location remained strong thanks to outdoor seating.
Eric Cioffi expressed bittersweet feelings about leaving the community they built in Goochland but looks forward to a more relaxed lifestyle and traveling. The sale offers opportunities for new owners to continue or repurpose the property.
Richmond area residents who enjoyed Courthouse Creek’s farm-grown ciders will see the end of this local business as the owners transition to a new chapter on the West Coast.
