Databricks co-founder shares tips for landing big enterprise clients
Databricks co-founder emphasizes importance of people and processes over just tech to win large enterprise deals.
At a recent TechCrunch Disrupt event, Arsalan Tavakoli-Shiraji, co-founder and senior vice president at Databricks, discussed strategies for startups to secure large enterprise customers. He highlighted that having the best technology alone is insufficient to win contracts with big companies, according to TechCrunch.
Tavakoli-Shiraji shared that early in Databricks' history, the company struggled to close deals because it underestimated the importance of relationships and organizational processes. For example, he recalled a prospect who was loyal to a competitor due to past commitments, making it difficult to gain traction.
He also noted that startups often falter when unprepared for legal, contractual, or security inquiries during negotiations. Databricks initially failed to secure a meeting with UBS, a major Swiss bank, illustrating these challenges.
A turning point came when Databricks partnered with Microsoft as an Azure cloud partner. This partnership allowed Databricks to leverage Microsoft's sales agreements and teams, facilitating access to enterprise customers and smoothing the sales process.
Tavakoli-Shiraji's insights suggest that startups aiming for enterprise clients should focus on building strong partnerships and preparing thoroughly for the complex sales environment beyond just showcasing technology.
What we're watching: How other startups might adopt similar partnership strategies to accelerate enterprise sales growth in competitive tech markets.
