Democrat Gina Hinojosa wins Texas governor's race, ending Republican hold since 1995
Gina Hinojosa becomes Texas' first Latina governor and first Democrat in the role since 1995, defeating incumbent Greg Abbott.
Democrat Gina Hinojosa has won the 2026 Texas gubernatorial election, defeating three-term Republican incumbent Greg Abbott, according to CBS News and NBC News projections.
Hinojosa, a state representative from Austin, will be the state's first Democratic governor since 1995 and its first Latina governor, NPR News reported.
Her victory marks a significant political shift in Texas, ending more than three decades of Republican control of the governor's office that began when George W. Bush succeeded Democrat Ann Richards.
During the campaign, Hinojosa focused on issues such as affordability and public education, opposing Abbott's policies like the school voucher program and advocating for increased investment in public schools.
The candidates also disagreed over the expansion of data centers in Texas, with Abbott pausing new permits and Hinojosa calling for a moratorium until further protections are established.
Following the election projection, Abbott addressed supporters and conceded the race, as reported by ABC News.
