DoorDash announced plans to acquire Instacart in a $17 billion deal, aiming to consolidate grocery delivery services in the U.S. and Canada, WKMG News 6 ClickOrlando reported. Instacart, founded in 2012, specializes in grocery and convenience store delivery, with a network of 600,000 independent contractor shoppers who will continue fulfilling orders under the new ownership.

According to WKMG, DoorDash stated that the Instacart brand and app will remain operational, and customers currently paying separate fees for DashPass and Instacart+ memberships will be able to pay a single fee for combined services. This change will provide access to 50,000 additional stores available on DoorDash's platform.

The deal is expected to help local grocers in the Orlando area and beyond compete with larger national players like Walmart, Costco, and Amazon, which dominate significant market shares. DoorDash's CEO highlighted that the merger aims to equip retailers with modern technology and delivery capabilities to better compete in the current market.

Additionally, grocers will have the option to choose either DoorDash or Instacart for delivery services, potentially increasing flexibility and options for consumers in Orlando and surrounding communities.

This acquisition also positions DoorDash and Instacart to better compete against rivals such as Walmart, which has been expanding into restaurant delivery services, including partnerships with in-store restaurants like Subway.

The deal reflects ongoing changes in the grocery delivery landscape that could impact how Orlando residents access grocery and convenience store items in the near future.
