Orange County mayoral candidates debate tax and affordability policies
Chris Messina and Tiffany Moore Russell faced off in final debate ahead of Orange County mayoral election.
Orange County mayoral candidates Chris Messina and Tiffany Moore Russell participated in a final debate ahead of the upcoming election, according to Central Florida Public Media.
Messina, an entrepreneur, emphasized a need for new vision in the county and focused on addressing affordability by attracting technology jobs and trades education. He committed to not raising taxes and expressed willingness to cut taxes if possible, referencing Amendment 3, a proposed constitutional amendment that would expand homestead exemptions and reduce government revenue.
Moore Russell, a former county clerk and commissioner, questioned Messina's tax-cut promises, stating she would not commit to cutting programs without understanding their impact. She highlighted her extensive local government experience and said voters know her capabilities based on her past service.
The mayoral race will determine who replaces outgoing Mayor Jerry Demings, who previously served as Orange County sheriff and Orlando's police chief.
