Prince George’s County Council drops auditor appointment amid investigation
Prince George’s County Council pulled Marcel Emerson’s appointment as county auditor during final session, with no explanation given.
The Prince George’s County Council has withdrawn its decision to appoint Marcel Emerson as the new county auditor, according to The Baltimore Banner. The appointment was initially announced as a move to strengthen oversight, transparency, and accountability in the county’s Office of Audits and Investigations.
This development comes as the Office of Audits and Investigations is conducting an inquiry into the spending of millions in council funds by an organization linked to the council chair’s close friend and the group’s California-based fiscal sponsor. The investigation was requested by County Executive Aisha Braveboy.
Despite the initial announcement, the council quietly removed Emerson’s appointment from the meeting agenda earlier this week, and the 2026 legislative session ended without any formal appointment. The council chair, Oriadha, said the appointment letter was added prematurely and that further steps may be needed before a formal announcement.
At a press conference, Oriadha declined to explain why the council did not proceed with the appointment or whether Emerson remains a candidate. Emerson, who has experience as a financial controller and former account manager for Prince George’s Community College, did not respond to requests for comment.
Concerns about Emerson’s appointment were raised by at least one council member, Jolene Ivey, who initially supported the appointment but later called for additional vetting to ensure no affiliations with council members influenced the decision.
