Escondido native Darren Kiner shares insights on animation career
Darren Kiner, an Escondido native, discusses his work in animation and his experiences in the industry.
Darren Kiner, who grew up in Escondido and attended UCSD Film School, is currently a CGI lighter, compositor, and supervisor in the animation industry, according to animationinsider.com.
Kiner’s career includes work on well-known projects such as Aladdin, Iron Giant, Fantasia 2000, Thirteen Days, and Charlie Wilson’s War. He began his animation career with a job on Aladdin, where he worked on the CGI Magic Carpet.
His typical workday involves lighting shots in Maya, rendering them, and compositing in Nuke. He notes that lighting is his favorite part of the job, and he also enjoys pursuing personal art projects outside of work.
Kiner expressed frustration with the industry’s treatment of artists, citing short schedules and stressful deadlines as challenges. He also mentioned that technology in his field has seen little change recently, with Maya remaining dominant and compositing becoming more influential due to its efficiency.
Despite difficulties, Kiner continues to work closely with talented colleagues and remains engaged in his craft, encouraging others to develop their own art alongside their professional work.
