Etsy is implementing stricter policies to regulate the use of AI in product listings, aiming to reduce misleading AI-generated content, The Verge reported.

The company now mandates that every listing must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, ensuring buyers see an accurate representation of what they will receive.

While additional photos can be edited with software or AI tools, they must still accurately represent the physical product. Etsy shared examples of prohibited misleading images to clarify the guidelines.

If Etsy detects potential AI-generated images during upload, it prompts sellers to disclose whether the image was AI-created. Buyers can report if received items differ materially from listings, which may lead to seller refunds.

These changes respond to buyer confusion over AI content and seller concerns about their work appearing alongside misleading AI-generated items, according to Etsy's announcement.

The new policies reflect Etsy's effort to maintain trust and transparency on its marketplace as AI tools become more prevalent in content creation.
