a16z Crypto rebrands as a16z Frontier to expand beyond blockchain
Andreessen Horowitz's digital asset unit broadens focus to include AI, robotics, and new network technologies.
Andreessen Horowitz announced that its digital asset unit, formerly known as a16z Crypto, has been renamed a16z Frontier, signaling a shift in investment focus as blockchain investing declines, TechCrunch reported.
The unit, led by Chris Dixon, has raised nearly $10 billion since 2018 and backed major crypto successes like Coinbase but has struggled to extend crypto’s utility beyond finance.
Under the new name, a16z Frontier will broaden its scope to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and new networks that connect humans and machines, while continuing to support blockchain technology for its economic capabilities.
General partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet will join Dixon in leading the expanded mandate. Meanwhile, Ali Yahya, the first investor in the crypto strategy, has left the firm, according to The Information.
This rebranding reflects a strategic response to the evolving technology landscape and investment trends, as the firm adapts to opportunities beyond traditional crypto assets.
