Federal court rules Trump’s National Guard deployment to LA unlawful
A federal appeals court in San Francisco ruled that Trump's deployment of California National Guard troops to Los Angeles was unlawful.
A federal appeals court in San Francisco ruled that President Trump’s deployment of 4,000 California National Guard members to the Los Angeles area last year was an unlawful abuse of authority, according to mynewsla.com.
The 2-1 decision by a three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals followed a precedent set by the U.S. Supreme Court in December, which had found Trump’s federalization of the Illinois National Guard illegal.
The court rejected the Trump administration’s claim that a “rebellion” in Los Angeles justified federalizing the National Guard, stating the argument did not fall within a “range of honest judgment.”
The administration had cited violent demonstrations protesting immigration crackdowns in downtown Los Angeles and other locations as justification for taking control of the guard from California Governor Gavin Newsom.
