Federal investigators are examining suspicious letters containing unknown substances sent to state election officials and congressional offices, CBS News reported.

At least six Democratic Senate offices, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's, were among those targeted, with most letters intercepted before delivery, according to CBS News.

NBC News added that more than a dozen election offices in at least 15 states received such letters, with preliminary tests indicating the substances are not hazardous but further testing is ongoing.

The FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and U.S. Capitol Police are involved in the investigation, and law enforcement is working to intercept additional letters before delivery, NBC News reported.

A notice was sent to Senate staff informing them of the investigation and the possibility that some letters may still reach their destinations, according to NBC News.

Officials emphasized their commitment to protecting election officials from threatening mail and continuing the investigation with all available resources, CBS News reported.
