Harriet Dart wins first WTA title with comeback in Guangzhou Open
British tennis player Harriet Dart claimed her first WTA singles title after a three-set victory over Austria's Lilli Tagger.
Harriet Dart secured the first WTA Tour singles title of her career by defeating Austrian teenager Lilli Tagger in the Guangzhou Open final, BBC Sport reported. Dart won in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, overcoming a set deficit in a tense match.
The British number five, ranked 115th globally, showed resilience after twice losing leads in the deciding set. She ultimately broke Tagger's serve for a third time to move ahead 4-3 and held serve to approach the title.
Dart faced two championship points on Tagger's serve but recovered to seal the victory with a service winner, falling to the court in celebration, according to BBC Sport. The win marked a career milestone as she came through qualifying to reach her first tour-level final.
Yahoo Sports highlighted Dart's fightback in the match, noting she saved three match points in the semi-final and managed to save two break points in the final set to hold serve at 5-3. Dart's victory also moved her back inside the world’s top 100 in the WTA rankings.
Dart expressed gratitude to her team and the crowd, saying it was amazing to play in front of such a big audience and that she hopes to return next year, Yahoo Sports reported.
