House Speaker Mike Johnson will not seek GOP minority leader role after losses
Following significant midterm losses, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced he will not run for minority leader in the new Congress.
House Speaker Mike Johnson informed his staff that he will not pursue the position of House minority leader after the GOP's extensive losses in the midterm elections, CBS News reported.
The announcement came a day after Democrats were projected to take control of the House with a wide majority, according to CBS News.
Jim Jordan, House Judiciary chairman, expressed interest in the minority leader role, emphasizing the need for a clear plan to counter the incoming Democratic majority, CBS News noted.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise also declared his candidacy for the minority leader position, as reported by NBC News.
Republicans plan to hold leadership elections on November 10, one week after Election Day, according to a GOP aide cited by CBS News.
Johnson had previously suggested he might leave politics if Republicans lost the majority, mentioning a possible return to his hometown and starting a lawn business, CBS News reported.
